Providing financial support to student journalists of color at Syracuse University and SUNY-ESF

APPLY NOW

The Daily Orange Inclusive Journalism Fellowship aims to address our historical shortcomings in fairly representing people of color, both in our newsroom and our coverage.

The fellowship grants will award four student journalists of color at SU and SUNY-ESF $2,000 each to craft a body of work over the course of a year that they otherwise would not have been able to create without financial support. Recipients will be selected at the beginning of each academic year by The Daily Orange Diversity Committee and guest panelists. The only eligibility requirements will be that the applicants must be SU or SUNY-ESF undergraduate students at least one year away from graduating and they must identify as people of color.

How to Apply

The Daily Orange is now accepting applications for its 2023-24 Inclusive Journalism Fellowship. The deadline to apply is September 20, 2023. Applicants will be notified of the fellow selection by October 8.

Interested students must complete the online application and submit a 1-2 page essay which serves as a statement of interest. Your essay should share what area of journalism (news, features, sports, opinion, etc) you are most interested in, any previous experience in that area, what types of projects you may want to pursue (column, video series, sports beat, etc.) and any ideas you have already. The essay should also include a short personal statement that contains information about financial need.

Applicants who have not worked at The Daily Orange before are encouraged to reach out to editor@dailyorange.com to learn more about the news organization and its operations.

Selection Process

Recipients will be chosen based on their demonstrated financial need as well as their written proposals about subjects they would like to cover. Recipients are not confined to the subjects they highlight in their application — rather, the application statement should serve as an idea brainstorm. Additionally, applicants do not need to focus on or write about a subject that relates to BIPOC communities to be considered for the award —  they are encouraged to pursue whatever stories they may be interested in, regardless of the subject’s relevance to diversity and inclusion.
