Following a 20-24 (12-20 Atlantic Coast) record in 2021, Syracuse softball announced the schedule for its 2022 campaign on Tuesday. The season will begin on Feb. 11 at the Best of the Bayou Classic with a double-header against Mississippi Valley State and Southern.
The Orange will round out the tournament with another double-header on Feb. 12 against Morehead State and Southern Illinois before a matchup with Stephen F. Austin on Feb. 13.
After a four-day break, Syracuse will then compete in the Tarleton Softball Invitational in Stephenville, Texas, which also starts with back-to-back double-headers – this time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Tarleton State on Feb. 18 followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Prairie View A&M on Feb. 19. SU will round out the tournament against Alabama State on Feb. 20.
Following another four-day intermission, the Orange will head to Auburn for the Plainsman Invite. The five-game stretch will start and finish against Auburn, with matchups against Bradley, Delaware State and Louisiana-Monroe in between.
Conference play starts for the Orange on March 4 with a three-game series at NC State. The two teams have not played since the opening round of the 2019 ACC Tournament, when the Wolfpack beat the Orange 4-3. Syracuse will then travel to Blacksburg for a three-game series against Virginia Tech, which swept the Orange in four games last season.
Syracuse’s next ACC matchup comes at Georgia Tech from March 25-27. The Orange finished one game ahead of the Yellow Jackets in the ACC standings last season, but they were eliminated by them in the first round of the ACC Tournament by a score of 6-0.
SU will then head home for a six-game home stretch of conference play against Pittsburgh and Notre Dame starting on April 1. Syracuse swept Pittsburgh in a four-game series last March and beat Notre Dame in the season-opener 3-2 after its first two games against the Fighting Irish were canceled.
ACC play will continue in a three-game home stint against Duke from April 22-24. The Blue Devils swept the Orange in four games last season and eventually went on to win the ACC Tournament as the third seed, beating then-No. 1 seed Clemson in the championship game.
Finally, after a May 4 matchup with Cornell, the Orange will round out their regular season at home against North Carolina from May 6-8. The Tar Heels won the season series 2-1 last year despite finishing below Syracuse in the conference standings.
The ACC Tournament will begin on May 11 in Pittsburgh, where Syracuse will compete for a spot in the NCAA Tournament with its 12 conference rivals – five of whom appeared in the tournament in 2021 (Duke, Florida State, Clemson, Virginia Tech and Notre Dame). The Orange have not made the tournament since 2012.
