Health professionals on campus should educate students about Juuling
Dear Editor,
There are high rates of “juuling” and vaping on college campuses. Specifically, Syracuse University’s student population has seen an increased use of Juul in the past two years since its development in 2015. “Juuling” has now become a major public health problem among college students as people are unaware of the health risks associated with e-cigarettes.
One Juul pod contains the same amount of nicotine as two packs of cigarettes. The issue lies within education. Students are not aware of the health risks and consequences of the long term use of Juul and other e-cigarette products because of the lack of studies on the effects.
Health professionals need to start educating students on college campuses about positive smoking cessation tactics other than the Juul. Students are not using the Juul to deal with their nicotine withdrawal. They don’t even know why they’re doing it but it’s becoming a serious health risk among the student population at Syracuse University.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Samantha R. Zive
