Arrest, charge made in October homicide that put SU campus on lockdown

The Syracuse Police Department arrested Keary Moore, 21, in the homicide of Zavion Escobar, the 15-year-old who was shot and killed on Hope Avenue on Oct. 14, police said.

After Escobar was shot on the 100 block of Hope Ave., the suspects fled by car and left the vehicle near Oakwood Cemetery, near the Syracuse University campus. The proximity of the incident caused SU to issue an Orange Alert with a message to “shelter in place.”

On Saturday at about 2 a.m., SPD patrol officers stopped a vehicle for a traffic infraction and the driver provided a false name, according to an SPD release. The driver was later identified as Moore, who is a Syracuse native, according to the release.

Moore was interviewed by SPD detectives in the Criminal Investigations Division and was charged with murder in the second degree, as a result of an ongoing investigation, according to the release.

Moore was also charged with false personation and traffic violations, according to the release. He is currently being held in the Onondaga County Justice Center.

The investigation will be continuing and more arrests are possible, according to the release.
