Syracuse Athletics announced Friday it will begin conducting a nationwide search for its next women’s basketball head coach. Acting head coach Vonn Read will remain in charge until a replacement is found.
“This will be an expeditious, efficient and thoughtful search that I am confident will result in the appointment of a top-notch coach,” Director of Athletics John Wildhack said in the release.
Read was with Syracuse for 10 years as an assistant, taking over as acting head coach in June following the resignation of former head coach Quentin Hillsman amid allegations of bullying and inappropriate behavior. He began after seven players transferred from the program, prompting a roster overhaul that culminated in four of the Orange’s five starters being transfer players.
Syracuse finished 2021-22 with its worst record since the 2006-07 season, but it saw Teisha Hyman break out as an All-ACC Honorable Mention. Read said after the Orange’s first round ACC Tournament loss on Wednesday that he was unaware of any plans for next season and would leave it up to the administration.
