Graduate student in Whitman hits and injures bicyclist with car
A graduate student in the Martin J. Whitman School of Management hit and injured a bicyclist with his car at East Genesee and Westcott streets Saturday night, police said.
Whitman student Shahryar Gheibi, 30, was driving east on East Genesee Street and was in the process of turning north on Westcott Street when he hit Anthony Patrone, 49, of Syracuse, according to a Syracuse Police Department release.
Patrone was struck while he was riding a bike going west on East Genesee Street, according to the release.
Patrone was conscious when he was taken to Upstate University Hospital and was listed as being in serious condition, according to the release. He sustained head and other minor injuries when he was thrown from the bicycle.
SPD received a call at 8:13 p.m. on Saturday about the collision, according to the release.
Gheibi said he did not see Patrone on the bicycle because the road was dark and the bicycle did not have lights, according to the release.
No tickets have been issued, according to the release.
