Syracuse dropped it’s second consecutive game to open Atlantic Coast Conference play on Thursday night, losing to No. 2 North Carolina 3-1 at Fetzer Field.
It was the first time in Syracuse (4-6-1, 0-2 ACC) team history that the Orange faced the No. 2 team in the nation directly after playing the No. 1 team. Syracuse lost to No. 1 Virginia on Sunday.
Syracuse couldn’t match the offensive firepower of the Tar Heels and were outshot 23-5. Twenty-four minutes into the game Alexa Newfield gave North Carolina a 1-0 lead and just over five minutes later Dorian Bailey pushed the lead to 2-0.
Sheridan Street scored on a long shot from the left side of the field in the 54th minute to cut the deficit to one. It was one of only two shots on goal for Syracuse.
But North Carolina answered quickly, and Jessie Scarpa’s header pushed the Tar Heels lead back up to 3-1.
SU’s rigorous road trip continues on Sunday, when it travels to No. 10 Virginia Tech in search of its first ACC victory.
