Chancellor Kent Syverud’s careful approach toward selecting a new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences demonstrates his desire to familiarize himself with the college and its needs before making a decision that will have long-term effects.

In December, current dean of Arts and Sciences George Langford announced that he would step down from his position in June to return to teaching. A formal search committee has not yet been formed to begin looking for Langford’s replacement, but Syverud has begun discussions with Arts and Sciences faculty members and plans to have an open meeting with students this Friday.

Though it is very possible that the college will need to select an interim dean — an interim dean will be put in place if a permanent dean is not selected by June 30 — it is commendable that Syverud is taking the time to better understand and gather what the college needs by consulting faculty and students.

The College of Arts and Sciences is one that reaches many students on campus as it offers more than 50 majors, so this choice will affect many students on campus. It is important that Syverud take the time to ensure that the students and faculty who are affected are able to provide their input in the decision-making process.

Syverud realizes the importance of making this a community decision. After his meeting on Friday, Syverud will have participated in at least seven meetings to discuss what makes a desirable candidate, said Ramesh Raina, head of the faculty council for the college.

Though there is still a significant amount of work that needs to be done before a dean is selected, Syverud is taking steps to ensure the process is moving along. However, because the need for an interim dean is likely, it is important that the proper steps are taken to select an interim dean who is qualified and equipped to take on the position.

Syverud’s careful consultation of Arts and Sciences faculty and staff shows the SU community that he is thinking about the long-term effects the decisions he makes as chancellor will have on Syracuse University.
